What are the recommended resources for a system running arachni?

That's a tough question to answer, the most important factor is on the other side, the webapp. The most CPU intensive operation is the crawl due to the parsing involved.
If the pages are small, with a simple HTML structure, the CPU will be idling. If the pages are big and complex and the website is very responsive (resulting in a lot of pages to be analyzed with little rest between them) then you can easily max out any CPU.
RAM-wise, 512MB should cover you -- although if you plan on running multiple scans at the same time you need to plan accordingly.
Generally, Arachni can be deployed in so many different ways that there isn't a simple rule of thumb. The best way to see what you need is test it and go from there.
