Unable to start scan on Windows

I am trying to run a scan using the windows GUI version of arachni. I have installed the latest Chrome driver as per the guides, but no matter what i do, i can't get a scan to start. the logs show an error about RUBYOPT: -S not being supported, and nothing else - the portal just reports "initialising scan....." and never starts.

I have tried both the current 1.6x release and the nightly 2.x release - both exhibit the same issue.

Can anyone assist?
